Global Day of Prayer Pentecost Sunday, June 4, 2006

History: Arising out of Africa at the dawn of this century, this global prayer movement has swept the earth in just six years. Some 45,000 people gathered in a stadium in South Africa in 2001, pouring out their hearts in repentance. Since then, the movement swelled to 22 million people gathered at more than 2,000 sites in every one of the 56 countries of Africa in 2004. The following year, an estimated 200 million people participated around the world, with the global prayer meeting beginning in Fiji and move around the time zones.

10 Days – 1 Day – 90 Days
Based on the Book of Acts, the Global Day of prayer model is inspired by the three parts of the birth of the Church: ten days of constant prayer leading up to Pentecost, one day of prayer witnessed by the whole city, and then many days of blessing that followed.

Dates for 2009:

  • Ten Days of Constant Prayer:
    Beginning Ascension Sunday,
    May 21 – May 30, 2009
  • The Global Day of Prayer:
    Pentecost Sunday, May 31, 2009
  • Ninety Days of Blessing:
    June 1 – August 29, 2009
